🛋️ Home & furnitureHow to remove leather sofa & bag stains

No water or bleach · wipe lightly and condition right away

How you treat stains on a leather sofa or bag depends on whether the surface has a protective finish. Put a drop of water on a hidden spot: if it beads, the leather is finished; if it soaks in right away and darkens, it has little or no finish.

🔬 Why this order works

Leather goes stiff and leaves a ring when it gets wet and dries, and alcohol, bleach and strong detergents strip its color and oils so it cracks. So use mild detergent or a leather cleaner a little at a time, and absorb oil stains with powder.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

🧰 By material

① Finished (coated) leather

Most sofas and bags fall into this group, and wiping with mild detergent removes most stains. Don't use alcohol, as it can dissolve the finish.

② Light-colored leather

Transferred color, like denim dye or ballpoint pen, shows easily. The sooner you wipe it, the better it comes out; once it's old, it may need recoloring.

③ Nubuck, suede & unfinished leather

Any water that touches it becomes a stain. Clean it dry with a dedicated eraser and brush, and leave the rest to a leather specialist.

🚫 Don't

  • Frequently wiping with alcohol wet wipes — the oils and color come out and it cracks.
  • Using chlorine bleach or heavy-duty kitchen cleaners.
  • Drying quickly with a hair dryer or in the sun — the leather goes stiff and cracks.

⏳ If it has already dried

Old stains have soaked into the leather and are hard to remove completely at home. Try wiping with a leather cleaner a few times, and if it remains, take it to a specialist. The harder you rub, the more the finish wears away and the more it shows.

💡 Tip

Keep a leather sofa away from sunlight and heaters, and condition it with leather cream now and then so stains soak in less.

❓ Common questions

I got oil on leather.

Don't wipe it with water; press with a paper towel to absorb it, then cover with cornstarch or baking soda, leave for a few hours and brush off. If it doesn't come out in one go, repeat.

Mold has grown on leather.

Brush it off outdoors with a dry cloth, wipe with leather cleaner, then let it dry completely in the shade. Don't use bleach, and deal with the humidity where it's stored as well.
